This project was comprised of two historic structures that stand side-by-side on the town square in Saint Jo, Texas. One building is a two story bank built in 1912 and occupied continuously by the First National Bank of Saint Jo until purchased by The First State Bank of Gainesville, Texas in 2008. The adjacent building is a one story retail structure also built in 1912. It now serves as additional operational space for the bank.
WKA's client, The First State Bank of Gainesville, requested assistance in remodeling to expand the lobby and office functions while enhancing and restoring the historic character of the bank lobby. Modifications included the removal of lay-in ceilings to expose existing pressed tin coffered ceilings, relocation of the teller line to original location and configuration, the elevation of the floor in the adjacent one story structure to the same level as the bank floor, replacement of small exterior windows with aluminum frames of similar character to the double hung original windows. All exterior work was coordinated with the local Historic Preservation Advisory Board to maintain the appropriate historical character of the buildings. The remodel also includes modifications to meet current accessibility requirements.
